Six

After Margo and Rita left the store, I placed a quick call to Grampy. He said he was on his way home and would be happy to check in on Lola for me. Phone in hand, I debated texting Lola but didn’t want to disturb her if she was resting again. I also didn’t want to talk to Deegan just yet, in case he’d heard about our hospital visit.

“Dana called.”

“Hmm?” Becca’s voice interrupted my harried thoughts.

“Dana. She said she’s on the way to start setting up for this evening’s St. Patrick’s Day craft.” Becca grinned. “Apparently, she has something extra special in mind, due to all of the ‘criminal elements on the loose these days’, as she put it.”

Partly intrigued, partly worried, I spent the next half hour trying to imagine how Dana could turn a simple craft night into a criminal combatting scenario but failed. Nothing in my wildest imaginations could have prepared me for Dana’s announcement when she walked in, faithful husband Bill in tow.

“Charity,” she said. “Tonight’s St. Patrick’s Day Leprechaun Security Gnomes were inspired with you and poor Lola in mind.”

Bill stepped around Dana and set down two small boxes. “Good luck,” he whispered. Moseying to the back corner, he pulled out a chair and sat. Legs stretched out before him, he pulled a cap down over his eyes and began to snore quietly.

Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. I gathered my nerves before I asked the obvious question. “What is a leprechaun security gnome?”

“The answer to your problems, of course.” Dana, dressed in a yellow-green matching sweatsuit resembled a large pear even more than usual, gave a little bow as if she’d just solved world hunger.

“I’m afraid I’m going to need more details. Like, all of the details. How is this a craft for tonight, what are we doing? Walk me through the steps, please, because I thought tonight was a simple leprechaun craft night.”

“It was, but now I’m making things a little more high-tech. Let me show you.”

I followed Dana over to the two boxes Bill had carried in for her, honestly surprised she even knew what high-tech was. Bill and Dana lived outside of town on a few cozy acres of trees and land. She had always seemed very old-fashioned. Then again, I kept forgetting the period when she had her heart set on becoming a YouTube sensation. People can be surprising.

“This box is all of the regular supplies to make leprechaun gnomes, little gnomes with green hats, shamrocks, maybe a pot of gold. This box, however, is one that you’re really going to love.”

Dana peeled back a long strip of tape and popped the flaps open one at a time. Leaning forward, I frowned. “I still don’t know what I’m supposed to be excited about. What are these?” It sounded like dominoes clacking together as I sifted my fingers through the box full of tiny, black circular objects. They were almost like miniature hockey pucks but with a clear circle on one side.

“Spy cameras!”

“Excuse me?” One eyebrow rose nearly to my hairline.
